Travels of America's back roads and the mind of that rambler. Let's see where both lead.
About Me
Hi! My name is Dan Evans and I live just north of the state capital of Florida in Havana, about 5 miles south of the Georgia border. I retired from working with the state of Florida at the end of 2013 but have been back in a part time role since shortly after that "retirement" date. My work is as a Microsoft Windows network administrator so that forces me to keep up with the technology.
I'm a native Floridian, born in St. Augustine, as was my father, born in Sanford. My mother came from "up north"--born in Georgia! I spent the first ten years of my life, welcoming twin brothers to the family, when I was 4, then moved to "The World's Most Famous Beach", Daytona Beach, in 1957. Big Bill France opened Daytona International Speedway two years later and my father, always willing to work to bring in extra income, worked the races on weekends. So I pretty much grew up at the track, accompanying him, and even though my political and social views are on the liberal side, I'm a big NASCAR fan!
I graduated from high school there in 1964. We just had our 50th reunion! (Lot of old people there.) It was the height of the build up of the Viet Nam war, so to avoid being drafted to be cannon fodder, I enlisted in the U. S. Army Security Agency and spent time at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, then at the National Security Agency at Ft. Meade just outside Washington D. C. and then in Germany for two and a half years. After discharge, I remained in Europe working for about the next five years. Traveled a lot, both on and off the job and enjoyed many wonderful places and people. My son was born in Germany in 1971. Some 15 years later, I met my wife whose son was coincidentally born with about 3 months of mine. Now my son has 3 children and my wife's son has 4, making us grandparents 7 times over!
I graduated from Florida State University after returning to the U. S., with degrees in American Studies and German/Russian. Really good preparation to become a paid computer nerd :-). I ran my own computer business for a number of years until computer prices dropped so low it was difficult to make a living at it, then taught computer classes for a number of years and spent the last 18 years of my full-time career and a network admin.
My wife and I and our pets live on a little over 10 acres of land on a lake and are really enjoying the good life. We have an RV and hope to do some exploring of this great country in the coming years.
